Bikes in Schools Program
Project Summary
Currently in Saratoga Springs, NY there is an enduring, and growing, interest in mountain biking, with new trails and a bike park coming online, a fast-growing NICA program (80% girls!), and a very effective non-profit learn-to-ride K-12 program called Shreddesr MTB. The momentum for kids on bikes in this small city (population 28,300) has inspired us to establish mountain biking in the PE curriculum across the district.
In February 2023, we piloted a Learn 2 Ride Strider program in Kindergarten classes at Greenfield Elementary. In March we funded this program for Caroline Street Elementary School, and by May of 2023, we were able to fully fund programs in all 6 of the Saratoga Springs Elementary Schools, in September, 2024, we rolled out a fully funded middle school program and in July 2025, we now have a fully funded High School program. The first K-12 Bikes in Schools program in the nation!

Thanks to your contributions, we’ve accomplished so much:
We wrote a specialized curriculum for the PE teachers, thanks to the expertise of Anya Bruhin.
We ran professional development sessions for all the PE teachers last spring, led by Shredders' own Coach Coordinator, Sheray Tario.
We purchased and assembled 30 bikes this summer, with a special thanks to Niles Gagnon and his incredible mechanic team at Grey Ghost Bicycles for their hard work and for securing discounted fleet pricing.
We built a fantastic 0.8-mile trail behind the middle school, made possible by the trail-building expertise of Art Picard and Erin Lasky from Saratoga Mountain Bike Association (SMBA).
What’s next for our Bikes in Schools program?Program Expenses: for trailer, helmets, curriculum, etc.
